The solo exhibition for the first time in three years will provide an opportunity to enjoy Kohei Yamada's more sophisticated techniques and expressions, especially around large works. 【作家ステートメント】
「I'LL BE YOUR MIRROR」
約3年ぶりとなる今回の個展のタイトルは、1964年にアンディ・ウォーホルがプロデュースしてデビューしたロックバンド「ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンド」の曲名です。このタイトルには、私がいつも自分の内面を多分に反映した絵を描いているのと、ARTはどんな類の作品であっても作り手のリアリティを映す分身のような存在であってほしい、観る側も鑑賞を通して自分自身を省みる鏡のような作品が良き作品・良き鑑賞である、という考えを込めています。
2021年ごろまで、私は現代アートの巨匠や時折、近代美術の要素を取り入れた作品を多く描いてきました。しかし、最近では、歴史を遡り、キリスト教や仏教など宗教画から着想を得ることが多く、自身の作品に取り入れています。また、これまで以上に大作を描くようになりました。画題や引用元の変化は、私の内面の変化によるものです。私自身「画家」というものへのロマンティシズムやセンチメンタルが年々増しており、古典画家のように卓越した技術と祈りを込めて、ゴッホ等のように切実さと情熱を込めて、画面に専心して描きたいという憧れ(かなり理想化を含む)が膨らんできていることに起因します。
作品のサイズ感についてはより現実的な理由となりますが、2021年頃から描画材料を油絵具からアクリル絵具へ移行したことで、大きな画面に挑戦しやすくなったことが挙げられます。また、絵具を垂らしたり飛ばしたりするなど、偶然性のある描き方も取り入れることで、より表現の幅が広がりました。
これからも作品内容の深度と広がり、そして画面上の豊かさの追求に尽力し、他でもない山田航平の作品となれるよう、単に趣を変えたのではない、緩やかに良好な変化をし続ける所存です。
【Artist Statement】
"I'LL BE YOUR MIRROR"
The title of this solo exhibition, first time in three years, is from the song by "Velvet Underground", a rock band produced and debuted by Andy Warhol in 1964. The title of this exhibition reflects the idea that I have always painted pictures that reflect my inner self, that I want any kind of artwork to be like an alter ego that reflects the reality of its creator, and that a good work of art and good appreciation of art are those that are like mirrors in which the viewer can reflect on himself or herself through viewing an artwork.
Until around 2021, I had painted many works inspired by masters of contemporary art and occasional elements of modern art. More recently, however, I have been going back in history and incorporated inspiration from Christian, Buddhist, and other religious paintings in my works. I have also begun to paint larger works than ever before.
The change in the theme of the painting and the source of the inspiration is due to my inner change. My own romanticism and sentimentality toward "painters" have been increasing year by year, and this is due to my growing yearning (including considerable idealization) to paint with great skill and prayer like the classical painters, and with earnestness and passion like Van Gogh, etc., and to devote myself to painting.As for the change of works' size, there is more practical reason. As I shifted a painting material from oil to acrylic paint around 2021, it made it easier for me to take on the challenge of larger paintings. In addition, by adopting accidental painting techniques such as dripping or skipping paint, I have been able to expand the range of expression even further.
I will continue to make efforts to pursue depth and breadth of content and richness on the image, and I will continue to make gradual and positive changes, not merely a change of taste, so that the work can become the work of Kohei Yamada, who is unique in his own right.
