【Gallery statement】

Jiro Oyamada (1914 -1991) was diagnosed with Weber's disease at the age of two, which left a large bruises on his face.

It is not hard to imagine that he became introverted as a result of the strange looks and discrimination he received from those around him. He immersed himself in literature and painting, maintaining his peace of mind by sinking deep into a world of fantasy, and produced many excellent works, as if painting was the very act of living.

After the war, he also turned his attention to the absurdity of society, and in the early 1950s, he introduced the series "Nasty Fellow" and "Shokutaku (Dining Table)" to the world. As if endless desire were the root of all evil, he created images of people, sometimes humorous, sometimes filled with hatred, that depicted the authority of the time and the depths of the karma of human.

This exhibition will feature around 20 oil and watercolor paintings, mainly from above series, as well as the "Bird Woman" series, which he continued to paint throughout his life, in a retrospective of the artist's early career.

This exhibition is a prayer for peace in the midst of recent conflicts in various parts of the world.
