YOSHITOSHI KANEMAKI INSIGHT PRISM

Yoshitoshi Kanemaki has established a strong reputation both in Japan and abroad for his three dimensional works inspired by multi faced, multi armed Buddhist statues, as well as Cubism and Futurism. This exhibition, the artist's first solo show in two years, will present the largest sculpture created in his ongoing "Prism" series, which give form to shifting self images and multi layered, intersecting self consciousness like a kaleidoscope.

【Artist Statement】

"All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players."
This is the famous line from a play by William Shakespeare.
Indeed, we all play multiple roles in our daily lives, switching between them as different situations unfold.
While such shifts can be seen as a necessary social manner to keep life running smoothly, there are times when we lose vision of our "true self." If this sense of being compelled to play different roles is common throughout people living today, perhaps the question of where one's true identity lies could even become a social issue in itself. The idea for my new sculpture began with the question: What might the form of searching for one's "true self" look like?
In the title "Insight Prism," the word "Insight" carries the meaning of seeing into the essence of things with clarity, while "Prism" metaphorically refers to elucidating what is complex. The work embodies distorted reflections of the self and intersecting layers of self consciousness, refracted, decomposed, and reassembled through a triangular motif a sculptural approach I call "Prism."
I invite you to experience the evolution and deepening of the "Prism" series at the exhibition.
